Alcohol sales hours: what time can you buy alcohol in Cabo by type of business

Alcohol sales in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are governed by the state law that regulates the storage, distribution, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in Baja California Sur (Article 19). The standard hours are:

A few important notes:

• These are maximum legal hours. Each store sets its own opening hours inside that window, so some close earlier.
• Extra hours are possible. The law allows businesses to apply for and pay for extended hours, so you may see some places open later. Do not count on it.
• Rules can change. The municipality can set specific conditions, and laws are amended from time to time. Check locally if your plans depend on a specific hour.

What time can you buy alcohol in Cabo after 10 PM?

In most cases, no. Retail sales for take-away at liquor stores and supermarkets end at 10:00 PM under the standard schedule. After that, alcohol is generally only served by the glass at licensed bars and restaurants during their hours. If you are hosting at a villa, the simplest solution is to stock up during the day so you are not caught short at night. So when guests ask what time can you buy alcohol in Cabo late at night, the safe answer is to plan ahead.

Dry days (ley seca) in Cabo

Article 21 of the same law prohibits alcohol sales on election days and on days that the local government declares for reasons of risk, emergency or public safety, such as an approaching hurricane. These dry days are often called “ley seca”. They are usually announced shortly before, and they can affect stores, supermarkets and delivery services alike. If your trip overlaps with an election or a storm watch, buy what you need ahead of time. Always check this before deciding what time you can buy alcohol in Cabo on a holiday weekend.

The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18. Stores may ask for ID, and alcohol is delivered with age verification where required. Have a passport or other photo ID ready for the adult who receives the order. Knowing what time can you buy alcohol in Cabo also means having your ID ready.
